Dog requiring Regenerative therapy

Regenerative Therapy

Regenerative Medicine is a new and rapidly advancing form of therapy in the field of both veterinary and human medicine. It is a form of biological therapy – using the body’s own anti-inflammatory and healing mechanisms instead of drugs and surgery. There are two types of therapy that can be used individually or in combination: Stem Cell Therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy.

Stem Cell Therapy

Adult Stem Cells are naturally occurring cells within the body that have the ability of self renewal and have the potential to change into a range of different tissue types, including muscle, cartilage and bone. These regenerative cells are the body’s own repair system; they move to damaged tissue, where they migrate inside and around the injured area, act to reduce inflammation and pain, attract other healing cells within the body and co-ordinate the process of active tissue regeneration.

Stem Cell Therapy involves injecting stem cells into a site of injury or disease. This alleviates pain and inflammation in conditions such as osteoarthritis and has been shown to improve structural damage and enhance tissue repair in degenerative joint disease and soft tissue injuries, such as in tendons, ligaments and skin.

Our Regenerative Therapy service offers Stem Cell therapy based on either cultured Adipose Tissue Derived Stem Cells or Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) Stem Cells. The stem cells are sourced from either a fat sample or from bone marrow of the patient; this tissue is then processed using specialized systems ready for injecting at the site of injury or disease.

Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a specially processed, highly concentrated blood sample that contains isolated cells (platelets) and the fluid portion of blood (plasma). When used as a therapy, PRP can help to regenerate and heal tissue by recruiting cells to an area of injury to ‘clean up’ dead and injured cells and by releasing proteins called ‘Growth Factors’ which are responsible for tissue regeneration.

PRP is produced from a blood sample taken from the patient and processed in our laboratory using a specialized system that separates and concentrates the platelets and plasma ready for injecting at the site of injury or disease.

Our Regenerative Therapy service uses Stem Cell therapy and PRP therapy individually or in combination to treat a range of conditions in our patients:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Acute and chronic soft tissue injuries
  • Tendon injuries
  • Ligament injuries
  • Muscle injuries
  • Certain spinal conditions
  • Skin wounds

Regenerative Medicine offers our clients, and our patients, a biological therapy that can be used in combination with conventional surgical and drug based treatments or it can offer an alternative form of therapy when surgical intervention or drug treatment is not possible, inappropriate or not wanted.
